What made you decide to contest in school committee elections?
We're about to start with a new superintendent, a new assistant superintendent, and a new business manager. That's a lot of change all at once. Few candidates running have the experience to know what a normal year is like for the committee, or what issues to look out for, so I would like to help the district navigate safely through the next year.
Can you describe your experience as a student and how it shaped your vision?
Not many people know that Sharon used to have a Program for the Academically and Creatively Talented (ACT), though a number of people probably still remember the Alternative School, and can appreciate how not every kid is going to fit the same mold. I grew up in Silicon Valley at a time when gifted and talented programs like Sharon's ACT were the norm, so I can see what's lacking now. Another experience that shapes my vision is the fact that I chose to spend my sophomore year of high school attending an urban, underperforming school 15 miles away, where the student population is only 4% white. Because of that, I have some understanding of what it's like to draw attention by looking different, whether you want to or not. This is why I try very hard not to judge anyone based on what they look like, but rather by what they say and what they do.
What (if any) changes would you make if you are elected and how will it impact students of SPS?
I'd love to improve transparency and budget issues, which would hopefully free up resources to spend directly on teachers and students. I'd also love to adjust school start times so that students get more sleep. And I'd love for kids to have access to more interesting coursework and activities, and to learn more real world skills. Finally, I'd love to help the town achieve net zero emissions by 2050, though this is a commitment the town would need to make to students who will come later.
As the school committee is for students, why do you think should students choose you for school committee?
I have a solid understanding of what the committee can and cannot do. I also have a lot of procedural knowledge I'd like to share with new members and a new administration, so they have the best chance of success.
What is your favorite sports team?
The 2004 Boston Red Sox, hands down.
